First, let’s talk about the most accessible method. All you need is a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and a heavy object like a cast-iron skillet or a book. Simply wrap the tofu block in the towel and place it on a plate. Then place the heavy object on top of it and leave it for at least 30 minutes. Voila! Your perfectly pressed tofu is ready to use.

How to Press Tofu Using a Cutting Board

One easy way to press tofu without a press is to use kitchen towels or paper towels. Simply wrap the block of tofu in several layers of towels and place it on a plate or cutting board. Then, place another plate or cutting board on top of the tofu and weight it down with something heavy, like a cast iron skillet or a few cans of beans. Let the tofu sit for 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how firm you want it to be, and then unwrap it to reveal perfectly pressed tofu.

How to Press Tofu by Freezing it

Another method to press tofu is to freeze it first. Freezing the tofu changes its texture and makes it easier to press out the water. Simply thaw the tofu in the fridge or microwave, then wrap it in a paper towel or dishcloth and press it between two plates with something heavy on top. You’ll be amazed at how much water comes out!

Another fun option is using a clean kitchen towel or cheesecloth to wrap the tofu and twist it like a candy wrapper. You can even tie it up with some cooking twine or rubber bands to make it look like a little package! Then gently squeeze out the water over a sink or bowl, and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes. This method not only presses the tofu but also creates a unique shape that can be sliced or diced in different ways.
If you want to get even more creative, try using a potato ricer or garlic press! Yes, you heard that right. These tools are usually used for mashing vegetables or herbs but can also work wonders on tofu. Simply cut the block of tofu into smaller pieces, put them in the ricer or press, and squeeze them out as if you were making mashed potatoes or garlic paste. This method is quick, efficient, and can give you a very fine and smooth texture that’s perfect for dips, spreads, or vegan cheese.Last but not least, if you don’t mind getting a bit messy, you can always use your hands! Just take the block of tofu and gently squeeze it between your palms, like you’re wringing out a sponge. This will release the water and create some crevices and cracks that will absorb more flavor when cooking. You can also tear or shred the tofu into smaller pieces and crumble it with your fingers into a bowl. This method is great for making scrambled tofu, vegan meatballs, or any recipe that requires a more rustic and uneven texture.
