Two of my sisters (there are 7 of us) recently came to our place in Southern Florida for a visit. Southern Florida in February is one of the best places in the continental USA if you like warm sunny days and beautiful beaches with that warm tropical surf.

When we have visitors, I love to show off and visit the local farmer’s markets for lots of fresh vegetables and tropical fruit. Two of my favorite purchases are big, juicy, sweet Florida ruby red grapefruit and Florida avocados. Florida avocados are amazing.

The pit of a Florida avocado is as big as a medium Haas avocado. For this salad, I only used 1/2 of an avocado. An avocado is this big and needs an excellent avocado slicer.

Each avocado weighs a full pound. That’s a lot of avocados if you can’t find this beauty, purchase 2 medium Haas avocados.

Grapefruit and Avocado Salad Ingredients

This salad has avocado and grapefruit as the stars. The dressing is citrus vinaigrette with lemon, lime, and orange juice mixed with a bit of vinegar and olive oil. So fresh tasting and light. Finish with a garnish of cilantro, fresh ground sea salt, and pepper.

This salad is ready to serve. Enjoy its fresh, bright taste on a chilly winter day. If it’s cold and flu season, the vitamin C in the grapefruit is a great way to boost your immunity.

FAQ:

Q: What makes Florida avocados unique compared to Haas avocados?
A: Florida avocados are larger, lighter in flavor, and less creamy than Haas avocados. They typically weigh about a pound each and have a larger pit. For this salad, you can substitute 2 medium Haas avocados if Florida avocados aren’t available.

Q: Can I make this salad ahead of time?
A: Yes, but for the freshest flavor and texture, it’s best to add the avocado and citrus vinaigrette just before serving to prevent browning and maintain crispness.

Q: How can I boost the protein content of this salad?
A: Adding grilled chicken, shrimp, or chickpeas can make this salad a more filling meal while complementing its flavors.

Q: Is this salad suitable for a vegan or gluten-free diet?
A: Absolutely! The salad is naturally vegan and gluten-free. Just ensure that any additional toppings or ingredients, like croutons or garnishes, align with these dietary preferences.

Q: How do I store leftovers?
A: Store any leftover salad without dressing in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Add fresh avocado and dressing just before serving.

Q: Where can I find the tools you recommend for this recipe?
A: You can find tools like an avocado slicer through the Amazon affiliate links provided in the recipe post, supporting the blog at no extra cost to you.
