What do I need to Make Unicorn Popcorn?
This is another of my SIS (simple is smart recipes) for kids. This recipe is so easy to make, most kids will be able to make it with minimal supervision.

Let’s gather the ingredients for Unicorn Popcorn
- Two bags of microwave popcorn
- One cup of white candy melts
- One half of a cup of blue candy melts
- One half of a cup of hot pink candy melts.
- Lots of pink and blue sprinkles
- 2 tsp of Crisco vegetable shortening.

Make the Unicorn Popcorn:
- Pop the 2 bags of microwave popcorn and remove all of the kernels that didn’t pop.
- Melt the white candy melts and pour over the popcorn. Toss the popcorn to coat the popcorn with the white candy.
- Spread the candy out on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Melt the blue and pink candy melts in the microwave and then drizzle the popcorn with the melted pink and blue candy. Top with a generous amount of Unicorn sprinkles. I use Sprinkel Pop sprinkles.

FAQ:
Q: Can I use air-popped popcorn instead of microwave popcorn?
A: Yes! Just be sure to remove any unpopped kernels and adjust for quantity (about 10–12 cups of popped corn).
Q: What are candy melts and where can I buy them?
A: Candy melts are colorful, flavored confectionery coatings. You can find them online or at most craft or baking supply stores.
Q: Can I substitute the candy melts with regular chocolate?
A: You can, but candy melts work better for color and consistency. White chocolate can work if you add oil-based food coloring.
Q: Are there alternatives to Crisco shortening?
A: Yes, you can use coconut oil or any neutral vegetable shortening to help smooth the candy melts.
Q: How far in advance can I make Unicorn Popcorn?
A: It’s best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Q: What kind of sprinkles do you recommend?
A: Any pink and blue sprinkles will work, but Sprinkel Pop brand has colorful mixes that enhance the unicorn theme beautifully.

Notes
- Use white chocolate in place of the candy melts. The candy melts have artificial flavors.
- To color the white chocolate, use natural powdered food-based colors. (click here) for a link to purchase Jelife color. Remember, you have to use a color that works in an oil or candy base. The only colors I've found that work with candy are powders. Please don't purchase a powder that requires you to mix it in water before using it.
- Use sprinkles that are free of food dyes. Supernatural makes a variety of sprinkles that are free of food dyes. (click here to purchase)
