Instant Pot Black Beans: Easy High Protein Recipe!

Farmed Fred doesn’t like any kind of bean.  I love beans of all kinds.  So this is one recipe that I make for Farmer Fred, and I eat something else for protein,  chicken steak, or fish.  Beans remind me of home, of growing up.  We didn’t have an Instant Pot.  Instead there was always a kettle of legumes soaking on the stove, after a long overnight soak, mom would turn up the heat,  add salt and spices and in a couple of hours dinner would be ready.  Mid-afternoon, when I was starting to get hungry, I’d check out what the day’s protein was.  We mostly had lentils, navy beans, and pinto beans.  IDK why mom didn’t cook black beans.

Today Black beans are primarily thought of as a side dish.  But back then, they were the main event. Our Instant Pot Black Beans are seasoned with extra spices to bring out rich, earthy flavors you won’t find in canned beans, making them a delicious and nutritious addition to any meal.

Key Takeaways:

  • Our Instant Pot Black Beans recipe cooks dried beans quickly without soaking.

  • Seasoning during cooking enhances flavor, making beans ready for a variety of dishes.

  • Pressure cooking preserves nutrients and improves texture compared to traditional methods.

  • Cooked beans are perfect for meal prep and freeze well for future meals.

Flavor Boosting Tips for Instant Pot Black Beans

One of the best parts of making beans at home is customizing the taste. Here are some easy ways to add extra flavor to our Instant Pot Black Beans:

  • Spice it up: A pinch of cumin or a squeeze of lime juice after cooking adds brightness.
  • Herbs and aromatics: Bay leaves or fresh cilantro bring a fresh aroma.
  • Veggie boost: Toss in diced tomatoes, onions, or bell peppers before cooking for deeper flavor.
  • Smoky notes: Smoked paprika or chipotle powder adds a warm, smoky touch.

These simple tweaks can turn a basic batch of beans into a star ingredient for tacos, salads, or bowls. They also pair beautifully with Grilled Chicken, Roasted Vegetables, or a Warm Quinoa Salad — making them a versatile side that complements many main dishes.
