How To Keep Lettuce from Spoiling

Keep your lettuce from spoiling!!! Have you ever really looked forward to a fresh green salad of spring lettuce, sprouts, shoots and all of your favorite salad toppings? You go to the fridge for the big container of organic lettuce you bought a few days ago and pull it out in anticipation of a yummy salad but much to your dismay, when you open the box, your nose detects something unhappy–the distinct odor of rotten lettuce.  Oh, am I so bummed when that happens!

That need never occur again. I have an Rx I am going to share with you that will Keep Your Lettuce From Spoiling for a lot longer. I’ve kept lettuce from my garden fresh for up to a month with my SIS (simple is smart) method.

When you buy your greens in plastic containers, make sure to check the expiration date.  Stores will sell lettuce up to the day of expiration. When you bring this lettuce home, you will notice some of it is usually rotten.

Lettuce packaged in plastic boxes picks up moisture from humidity in the air, which makes the greens damp. The moisture on the lettuce is trapped in the plastic container, accelerating the spoilage process.

Rx to Keep Your Lettuce From Spoiling

  1.  As soon as you bring the lettuce home, empty all of it from the container and remove any pieces that are bruised and beginning to go bad.
  2. Take a paper towel square and fold it so half of the square is in the bottom of the plastic box and the other half is up the side of the box.
  3. Lay about 1/4 of the lettuce on the towel and fold the towel over the lettuce.
  4. Continue to layer the lettuce with additional sheets until it is all back in the box, and a sheet is covering the top layer.
  5. Close the lid and put it back in the fridge. The paper towel absorbs any excess moisture delaying spoilage.

This method works well for microgreens and sprouts. If you grow your own microgreens or sprouts, save one of the plastic lettuce boxes and reuse it to keep those fresh also. This method can be used for storing leaf lettuce.  You do need first to wash the lettuce, let it dry and then layer it in the plastic box with paper towels. Now you know how always to Keep Your Lettuce From Spoiling.
