Make it Healthy and Dye Free:

  1. Use White Chocolate in place of the candy melts. The candy melts have artificial flavors.
  2. To color the White Chocolate, use natural powdered food-based colors. (click here) for a link to purchase Jelife Color. Remember, you have to use a color that works in an Oil or Candy base. The only colors I’ve found that work with candy are powders. Please don’t purchase a powder that requires you to mix it in water before using it.
  3. Use Sprinkles that are free of food dyes. Supernatural makes a variety of sprinkles that are free of food dyes. (click here to purchase)

What do you need to make this very "cool" bark?

This Unicorn Bark is super easy and if you want to use the SIS (simple is smart) method you will only need two major ingredients. That’s right super simple.  Are you ready? The two simple ingredients are Candy melts and Unicorn Sprinkles. That’s it. I add a little Vegetable Shortening to help them melt smoothly.

Here is the scoop on creating these lovely Unicorn swirls of pink and blue Unicorn bark:

You can purchase the Colored Candy Melts or you can custom color white candy melts or white chocolate. If you decide to color white chocolate or the white candy melts, you will want to make sure you use a food coloring that says, “for candy” on it.  It is oil based instead of the water based food colorings. The water based ones will cause your chocolate to “seize” up and it will be ruined. Toss it out and start over.

FAQ for Chocolate Bark

How Long Will Chocolate Bark Last?

When it comes to the shelf life of chocolate bark, it largely depends on how it is stored and the ingredients used. On average, chocolate bark can last for about 2 to 3 weeks if stored in an airtight container in a cool and dry place. However, this can vary depending on the specific ingredients used. For instance, if the chocolate bark contains nuts or dried fruits, it may have a shorter shelf life due to the oils present in these ingredients. Additionally, if the chocolate bark is exposed to heat or humidity, it can result in a shorter lifespan. Therefore, it is essential to store chocolate bark properly to ensure its longevity and maintain its quality.

How do you Melt the Chocolate for Chocolate Bark?

To melt bark chocolate, you will need a few key ingredients and equipment. Firstly, you will need high-quality bark chocolate. It is important to use bark chocolate that is specifically designed for melting, as it contains a higher percentage of cocoa butter, which helps in achieving a smooth and glossy texture. Secondly, you will need a microwave-safe bowl or a double boiler to melt the chocolate. If using a microwave, make sure to heat the chocolate in short bursts and stir in between to prevent overheating. I melt for 15 to 30 seconds and then stir.  If using a double boiler, fill the bottom pot with water and place the chocolate in the top pot. Gently heat the water until the chocolate melts, stirring occasionally. Once the chocolate has melted, it can be used for various purposes such as dipping fruits or making chocolate-covered treats. Be sure to handle the melted chocolate with care, as it can be hot and may cause burns. Enjoy your melted bark chocolate creations!

Why won’t my Chocolate Bark Harden?

One possible reason why your chocolate bark won’t harden could be due to the presence of moisture. Chocolate is extremely sensitive to moisture, and even a small amount can cause it to seize, resulting in a grainy texture and inability to harden. It is important to ensure that all utensils and equipment are completely dry before working with chocolate. Additionally, make sure that the chocolate is not exposed to any steam or humidity during the melting process. Another factor that can prevent the chocolate bark from hardening is overheating. If the chocolate is heated above its recommended temperature, it can lose its temper, resulting in a soft and gooey texture instead of a firm and snappable one. It is crucial to use a thermometer and closely monitor the temperature while melting the chocolate. By addressing these potential issues, you can increase the chances of your chocolate bark hardening properly.

Why is Chocolate Bark Called Bark?

Chocolate bark is a popular treat that is often enjoyed during the holiday season. It is made by melting chocolate and then spreading it out on a baking sheet to cool and harden. The result is a thin, brittle piece of chocolate that is usually topped with various nuts, fruits, or candies. But why is it called bark? The name “bark” is thought to have originated from the appearance of the finished product. When the chocolate hardens and is broken into pieces, it often resembles the texture and appearance of tree bark. This resemblance has led to the name “chocolate bark.” Additionally, the act of breaking off a piece of the hardened chocolate can mimic the sound and action of breaking a piece of actual tree bark. Overall, the name “chocolate bark” seems to be a fitting and descriptive term for this delicious treat.
