Chocolate Hummus & Strawberries

Updated June 2024.  Chocolate Hummus with strawberries spread on a piece of Naan or pita bread. YUM!  Whoa, say what, chocolate hummus? Really? I saw this in the store the other day and knew I had to try it. I  almost brought it home and then realized I can always taste the preservatives in purchased Hummus. This is one of the reasons I like homemade so much better. So I added a few custom ingredients like homemade nut butter and probiotic yogurt to create a rich creamy Chocolate Hummus. It looks like chocolate pudding and tastes so much better.

After I made some I dipped some strawberries and bananas into it. YUM. I discovered it is also delicious, by the spoonful. It  also reminds me a bit of a tastes Reese’s peanut butter cup. I then decided to try it on bread and decided it way delicious on pita and naan bread. I’m not sure which one I like the best. It also makes an amazing dip for pretzel chips, pita chips and graham crackers.

SIS Tip - Simple is Smart for Chocolate Hummus

To make the chocolate hummus thick and spreadable add probiotic yogurt to the recipe. If you want to make the hummus thinner more like  a dip use a non dairy milk like almond milk or coconut milk. I start with 1/2 of a cup and adjust if needed.

Neuro=Nutrition of strawberries

Neuro Nutrition of Strawberries

Strawberries offer numerous health benefits, especially for the brain. These vibrant red fruits are packed with antioxidants and phytochemicals that help to protect the brain from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between harmful free radicals and antioxidants in the body, leading to damage to cells and tissues. By consuming strawberries, you can help reduce this oxidative stress and promote overall brain health. Additionally, strawberries contain a high amount of vitamin C, which is essential for the production of neurotransmitters, the chemicals that transmit signals in the brain. This can improve cognitive function and enhance memory.

Ingredients for Chocolate Hummus and Strawberries

  • Chick Peas:  I like to use my home canned chickpeas instead of the purchased ones in a can.  I think they are better for me as I don’t like the possibility of some of the chemicals of the can leaching into the food in the can.
  • Nut Butter:  Any nut butter will work in place of Tahini.  You can also use tahini but I love to make different nut butters and think the fresh nut butter is always a tastier option to purchased nut butters with preservatives.
  • Unsweetened Dark Cocoa Powder make sure you have the dark unsweetened cocoa powder.  Not Hot Chocolate Powder.
  • Maple Syrup:  This is the sweeteneer.  You can use honey or agave necter or maple syrup.  Make sure the maple syrup is real maple syrup not the maple flavored high fructose corn syrup.
  • Probiotic Yogurt:  I purchase plain non-dairy yogurt.  Almond milk yogurt is my current favorite.  I all a little honey to sweeten it and some vanilla and YUM!
  • Naan or Pita Bread:  you can also use this recipe as a dip and use pretzel or pita chips and all kinds of fruit.
