Make healthier chocolate chip cookies with this chocolate chunk cookie mix.  Instead of the usual chocolate chip cookies add healthy rolled oats. walnuts. and dark chocolate.   Make it Vegan with a plant based egg and vegan butter.  Gluten-Free no problem.  Use KAF Gluten Free Flour instead of all-purpose flour.

What do I need to make this gift? 

  • Quart jar with a lid:  I love the old fashioned jar with the lid that clamps on with a metal clamp. 
  • All-purpose flour or Gluten Free flour. 
  • Baking powder 
  • Baking soda
  • Salt
  • Old Fashioned Rolled Oats:  Don’t use steel cut oats or instant oats as the steel cut oats will won’t get soft, and the the instant oat make the cookie dry. 
  • Brown Sugar: Helps keep the cookie softer
  • Nuts – Walnuts are the healthiest nut for your brain.  You can also use pecans
  • Dark Chocolate Chunks – lots of good brain nutrition in dark chocolate.  Look for dark chocolate not semi-sweet or milk chocolate.

How do I make this Chocolate Chunk Cookie Mix? 

Layer the following ingredients in a one quart Mason Jar:

  • 1 cup of flour with  1/2 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp  salt, and 1/2 tsp baking powder added.  Mix altogether and put in the bottom of a 1 quart mason jar.  
  • 1 cup of packed brown sugar.  Pack the sugar into the jar. 
  • 1 cup of old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup of nuts, walnuts are healthiest but pecans will also work.  If you’re allergic to nuts substitute a cup of flaked coconut for the walnuts. 
  • 1 cup of dark chocolate chunks.
  • Print out the Gift Tag/Instructions and attach to the quart jar. 
  • Give as a gift and enjoy the smiles. 

If you want to make the dried orange ornament you see in the picture read my blog on how to dry oranges.  Then attach a cinnamon stick to a dried orange slice.  Use a  piece of thin jute or a ribbon. to attach it to your quart jar.

Additional notes for making the Chocolate Chunk cookies. 

The large chocolate chunk cookie on the left wasn’t refrigerated and was baked for 10 minutes.  It spread more and was thinner and crunchier.  The cookie on the right was refrigerated for 30 minutes and baked for 12 minutes  it is softer, chewier, and thicker.  If you like a thinner crunchy cookie don’t refrigerate the dough towers. 

You can add a few chunks of chocolate after the cookies come out of the oven.  I added a few chunks to the cookie on the right.

Ingredients

  • 1 mason jar of chocolate chunk cookie mix
  • 1 large egg (see notes) room temp.
  • 1 stick butter butter should be very soft almost starting to melt.
  • 1 tbsp vanilla

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 325℉

  • Remove the chocolate chips and nuts from the top of the jar and set aside.

  • Pour the rest of the jar into a mixing bowl

  • Add the butter, egg and vanilla to the bowl:

  • Beat until well combined.

  • Add the nuts and chocolate chips and mix in on low or by hand. Don't over mix as it will break up the nuts and chocolate.

  • Use a 2 Tbsp. (about 2 ounces) cookie scoop and create a cookie tower. The height of the unbaked cookie should be about twice the width of the base. When the cookie bakes a tall tower of dough will melt down into the perfect size cookie. If you don't make the cookie towers they will flatten into one giant mess.

  • Place the cookie towers about 2-3 inches apart on a parchment lined baking sheet.
  • Refrigerate the cookie towers for 30 minutes before baking. I make all of the towers and put them in the fridge on a cookie sheet. After 30 minutes I take out a dozen towers and bake them on a parchment lined cookie sheet. I leave the rest of the towers in the fridge. When my first pan is baked I take out the rest of the towers and bake them. This recipe makes about 20 large cookies.

  • Bake 325℉ for 10-12 minutes. At 6 minutes rotate your pan front to back and bake the second 5 minutes. At the end of 10 minutes check them for doneness. If remove from the oven and add a few chocolate chunks to the top of the cookies for decoration.

  • Let the cookies cool on the pan for 10 minutes after they are baked and then transfer to a wire cooling rack for another 20 minutes before eating. This gives them a chance to set up fully.

Make it Vegan and use Vegan butter and a plant based egg like Just Eggs.
