Most people don’t know this, but our bodies don’t make Omega-3 fatty acids. That means they are essential fats and critical for our health.  Our only source of essential nutrients is through our diet. 

There are four different O3FAs; the two that are important for good Brain function is DHA Docosahexaenoic Acid and EPA Eicosapentaenoic acid . Research Evidence suggests that it is critical for childhood brain function, eyesight, and neural development. Deficiency of DHA may contribute to the development of ADHD, Autism, Bipolar disease, and depression. Oily fish like salmon, Mackerel, and sardines are high in all of the O3FA including DHA and EPA.

However, if you are a vegan or vegetarian and don’t eat fish, plant sources of O3FAs are primarily ALA, and the best and virtually only plant-rich sources of DHA are seaweed and algae. You may want to consider a DHA supplement. I’m not a big fan of supplements, but this is one supplement I recommend if you are a vegetarian or vegan and don’t eat foods like nori, seaweed, spirulina, and chlorella.
