The Best Black Bean Patty Recipe I’ve Ever Made

My first choice for the name of this recipe was Black Bean Burgers.  They are as good as any burger I’ve had.  Now Farmer Fred disagrees, as he is an avowed anti-black bean anything.  Black beans in his world aren’t real food.  They are just fiber that his wife gives him from time to time.  Definitely not anything close to a burger.  So, to not insult him and all the other carnivores out there, I’m calling it a Black Bean Patty.

These patties have become a staple of my “burger” meals.  I make a big batch, freeze them, and take one out for a hearty and nutritious meal.

Key Takeaways:

  • This Black Bean Patty Recipe uses seasoned black beans and barley for a hearty, flavorful base.
  • Oat flour and egg (or flax egg) bind the patties, helping them hold together without being dense.
  • You can cook the patties three ways: pan-fry, air fry, or oven bake, depending on your time and preference.
  • These patties are perfect for tacos, nachos, lettuce wraps, or served alongside your favorite sides.
  • Make extra patties and freeze them for quick, healthy meals anytime.
  • Each patty offers a balanced mix of protein, fiber, and healthy fats for sustained energy.

Overview:

Black Bean Patties are plant-based alternative to traditional burgers, combining protein-rich black beans with wholesome grains and spices. This recipe elevates the classic black bean patty by incorporating seasoned black beans and pearl barley, which adds texture and a subtle nutty flavor. The oat flour helps bind everything together, while tomato paste and spices like smoked paprika and chili powder bring warmth and depth.

The process starts with cooking the seasoned black beans and barley ahead of time — this step infuses the beans with flavor and softens the barley for a tender bite. The mixture is then combined with oat flour, seasonings, and an egg or flax egg to create a cohesive dough. After chilling, the patties are cooked to golden perfection using your preferred method.

Recent Health Research

A comprehensive review published in Nutrients in 2023 examined the effects of pulses (which include black beans, lentils, chickpeas, and others) on human health. The study found that regular consumption of pulses is linked to improved cardiovascular health, better blood sugar control, reduced inflammation, and enhanced gut microbiome diversity. These effects contribute to a lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.

The fiber, protein, and antioxidant compounds in black beans play a crucial role in these benefits. This means that enjoying our Black Bean Patty Recipe regularly is not just a tasty choice — it’s a smart way to support long-term wellness and vitality.

What Makes Our Black Bean Patty Recipe a Kitchen Favorite

These black bean patties strike the perfect balance between hearty and light, making them a go-to for any meal. The combination of seasoned black beans and pearl barley creates a satisfying texture that’s both creamy and pleasantly chewy — something you don’t often find in typical bean burgers.

One of the best things about this recipe is how adaptable it is to your schedule and cooking preferences. Whether you prefer the rich, crispy crust that pan-frying creates, the lighter touch of air frying, or the convenience of baking in the oven, these patties come out delicious every time. Each method offers its own benefits — pan-frying maximizes flavor and texture, air frying cuts down on oil while keeping a satisfying crunch, and oven baking lets you prepare a batch hands-free, perfect for meal prep or feeding a crowd.
